Microneedling + PRP Before and Aftercare Tips

The ultimate guide to microneedling with PRP: how to prep your skin before treatment and care for it afterward to get the best possible results.

Microneedling with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) has become a popular treatment for those seeking to rejuvenate their skin and improve texture, tone, and overall appearance. This powerful combination promotes collagen production, accelerates healing, and enhances the skin's natural glow. To maximize the benefits, it's essential to follow proper before and aftercare guidelines.

Before Microneedling with PRP, Avoid Sun Exposure

Your skin will be sensitive to the microneedling process, and sunburned or irritated skin can increase the risk of complications. Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 24–48 hours before your treatment. If you must be outdoors, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher (though not on the day of the procedure).

Discontinue Certain Skincare Products

Harsh products like retinoids, glycolic acids, or exfoliating scrubs can increase skin sensitivity and irritation during treatment. Stop using these products at least 3–5 days prior to your microneedling session. Switch to gentle cleansers and moisturizers in the days leading up to your appointment.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is key to healthy skin and can improve the overall effectiveness of the treatment. Drink plenty of water in the days before your procedure. Hydrated skin heals faster and responds better to treatments.

Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine

Alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate the skin and may increase the likelihood of bruising. It's best to avoid both for at least 24 hours before your treatment.

Arrive with a Clean Face

Microneedling creates tiny punctures in the skin, so it's important to start with a clean, makeup-free face to minimize the risk of infection. On the day of your treatment, avoid applying any skincare products, lotions, or makeup. Cleanse your skin thoroughly before your appointment and come without products, including SPF.

After Microneedling with PRP, Avoid Sun Exposure

Your skin is highly vulnerable to UV damage after microneedling, which can lead to hyperpigmentation or irritation. Stay out of the sun for at least 72 hours post-treatment. When you do go outside, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and wear a wide-brimmed hat after the first 24 hours.

Skip All Skincare Regimens for 24 Hours

Your skin needs time to breathe and heal. Applying anything to the skin too soon can lead to irritation or even infection. Avoid all products for at least 24 hours after your treatment. When you resume, choose non-comedogenic, lightweight products. I recommend the Biojuve regimen.

Avoid Sweating or Intense Workouts

Sweat can irritate the micro-injuries in your skin, leading to inflammation or infection. Skip intense workouts, saunas, or hot yoga for at least 24–48 hours after your session.

Use Only Gentle Skincare Products

Post-treatment skin is highly sensitive. Harsh or active ingredients like retinoids, acids, or scrubs can cause irritation and delay healing. Stick to mild cleansers, soothing serums, and hydrating moisturizers. Avoid products with alcohol, fragrances, or exfoliants for at least a week post-treatment.

Don't Pick or Scratch

As your skin heals, you might experience some redness, tightness, or flaking. Picking can lead to scarring or infection. Let your skin heal naturally. Avoid touching your face unnecessarily, and if you experience flaking, allow it to shed on its own.

Final Thoughts

Microneedling with PRP is an incredibly effective treatment for rejuvenating the skin, but following the proper before and aftercare instructions is essential to ensure you get the best results. Microneedling is most effective when performed once monthly for 4 months initially, then reassessed 4–6 months after the final treatment.
