Lip Filler: Before & After Care

How to prepare for your lip filler appointment and care for your lips afterward: what to skip, what to expect, and when to call us.

Before Your Appointment

Avoid blood thinners for 3–5 days (unless prescribed by your provider): aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo, garlic supplements.

Skip alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours before, both reduce bruising and swelling.

No vaccines, dental work, or major procedures within 2 weeks of your filler appointment.

Arrive with clean skin (no makeup or skincare products on your lips or face).

Cold sore history? Ask about antiviral medication. Fillers can sometimes trigger a flare-up.

Eat beforehand. You may have some numbness and won't want to eat immediately after.

After Your Appointment, First 24–48 Hours

Expect mild swelling, redness, or tenderness.

  • Apply a cold pack (wrapped in a soft cloth) for 10–15 minutes at a time
  • Sleep with your head elevated the first night to minimize swelling
  • Avoid heavy exercise, heat (hot tubs, saunas, tanning), and alcohol

Do

  • Use gentle lip balm (nothing medicated or exfoliating)
  • Stay hydrated with plenty of water

Don't

  • Touch, massage, or press on your lips unless instructed
  • Apply lipstick or makeup for at least 12–24 hours
  • Drink through a straw or smoke for 24 hours, this creates pressure

What's Normal

  • Mild bruising (may last up to 7–10 days)
  • Asymmetry at first, swelling can make one side look bigger
  • Small lumps that soften over 1–2 weeks

When to Call Us

  • Severe pain, blanching (white/blue skin), or mottled discoloration
  • Sudden swelling that worsens after 48 hours
  • Signs of infection (fever, pus, spreading redness)

How Long Will My Results Last

Lip fillers typically last 6–12 months, depending on product and metabolism. Touch-ups help maintain your look.

Pro tip: Plan your treatment at least 2 weeks before events (weddings, photoshoots, vacations) so swelling and bruising have time to settle.
